Asset Languages is a unique assessment scheme which supports language teaching with a wide range of learners in KS3, KS4 and KS5. As an assessment scheme, it fits around your existing schemes of work, and offers a motivational tool to reward pupil achievement.

As well as French, German and Spanish, Asset offers assessment in over 20 different languages, from Arabic to Yoruba. The option of testing in one or two skills builds confidence, whether pupils are learning a language from scratch or improving a language spoken at home. You can mix and match languages and levels, for example testing a student's French reading skills at, say, Preliminary (a Level One qualification) and their French writing skills at Breakthrough (Entry Level).
Whether it's external assessment leading to nationally-recognised qualifications, or the more informal teacher assessment you are after, Asset Languages gives students credit for what they can do.
Asset test material is accessible for a broad range of learner with clearly laid out papers and questions in English.
Teachers are using Asset Languages to support their language teaching in Years 7, 8 and 9. Asset provides external assessment at this stage which gives pupils a valid qualification for each skill, whether or not they wish to carry on with languages in KS4.
According to CILT, the National Centre for Languages, Asset is the most popular form of alternative accreditation in KS3. Success in external assessment in KS3 counts towards KS4 achievement and attainment points. Introducing the more informal option of teacher assessment also gives pupils evidence of what they have achieved after several years of language learning and can help prepare them for externally-assessed tests.
For some pupils, Asset offers an alternative form of assessment to GCSE in KS4. Teachers appreciate the flexibility of Asset to assess pupils in separate skills at different times of the year, building up their confidence and improving their performance. Success in external assessment attracts achievement and attainment points. For able linguists, Asset's Advanced stage assessment material also provides a challenge in Year 11 for those who have already achieved a Level 2 qualification in Year 10.
Asset Languages rewards the progress of language learning at any level for students in Years 12 and 13. It is used to assess the progress of beginners in immersion courses as well as to complement AS/A level study. Advanced Stage Asset qualifications earn UCAS points for entry into Higher Education.
We have produced a template to help you make the case to introduce Asset Languages to your senior management team. The document sets out the benefits of Asset assessment for learners and to the centre and should be adapted to address the particular requirements of your school or college.
