Overview

GCSE Maths is being revised for first teaching in September 2010 with first certification in June 2012. Learners beginning a new course of GCSE Maths study will need to be working towards the new specification.

This revision takes into account the changes being made to the Key Stage 4 programme of study, which includes the functional elements of Maths.

As well as consulting with key stakeholders in the Maths teaching community throughout the development process, we've also been able to draw on the experience of thousands of learners who've taken part in our pilot GCSEs in Mathematics and Additional Mathematics, which have been running since September 2006.

We've done all this so that our new GCSE Mathematics specification, support materials and publisher resources will provide you with everything you need to teach our new GCSEs with confidence.

Introducing GCSE Mathematics A

Our GCSE Mathematics A specification's flexible structure will support your learners' growing understanding of mathematical concepts, giving you real choice to move your learners between routes - unitised, staged or linear - in response to their needs. Your learners will develop analytical and problem solving skills in a range of contexts, which they can take into employment or further study.

Benefits

You and your learners can benefit from our GCSE Mathematics A specification because:

  • It's been built with teachers in mind: its straightforward and genuinely flexible structure gives you the ability to teach the qualification in linear or unitised formats.
  • The units can be taught in any order, which means you can meet the demands of a wide range of learners and abilities.
  • A November series is now available to give your learners an extra option when it comes to entries, re-sits and certification.
  • We're developing unique, dedicated teaching resources to support you in teaching problem solving and functional mathematics - giving you and your learners the opportunity to succeed in this new area.
  • It will also be backed up by our new, free online results analysis software - Active Results. This allows you to analyse your learners' results in greater detail.
