We update these to ensure that you have the most recent and accurate information to support you in making your decision.

    • Additional barred combinations

As ICT Functional Skills are now part of the ITQ Application Specialist Apprenticeship, the three Fundamentals units at levels 1 and 2 are barred combinations.

    • Additional exam resit opportunity and near-pass grades for Level 3 Cambridge Technicals (2016) to continue

      We are retaining:

-The ‘near-pass’ unit grade for students who narrowly miss a Pass on externally assessed units

-The additional resit of external assessment(s), initially offered for the June 2018 series, for future exam series.

To help you and your students understand what this means we have a set of frequently asked questions about the ‘near-pass’grade, and an overview of the additional resit opportunity.

We are updating our centre handbooks to reflect these changes

    • Apprenticeship framework live for certification only

Please note that the Apprenticeship framework is only available for certification.

    • Assessment arrangements for Spoken Language

Ofqual have confirmed the assessment arrangements for the Spoken Language endorsement for the new GCSE (9-1) in English Language.

We have created a guidance document for teachers to outline the task requirements and assessment procedure for the Spoken Language endorsement. The new guide is available below under the 'Teacher guides' section.

    • Internal Assessment Update

Thank you for your continued feedback on our new Cambridge National Certificate in Information Technologies.

As a result of your feedback, we have made some improvements to the teaching content and guidance in the specification and an adjustment to the assessment of the internally assessed unit (R013).

A student can, at your discretion, attempt to improve their internal assessment result after moderation but will need to submit a new task for assessment rather than amend a previously submitted task. Our amended specification includes the full details of this change.

There are no changes to the arrangements for the examined unit. Students will still have the option to resit this once before they complete the qualification.

We will always use the best result from both assessment units to calculate the certification result.

    • Cambridge Technicals IT, an alternative to A Level ICT

If you are currently teaching the A Level in ICT, then the ideal replacement qualification will be the Level 3 Cambridge Technical Extended Certificate in IT. This qualification has recently been redeveloped so that it meets the DfE’s criteria for vocational qualifications that count in performance tables and the new version is ready for first teaching in September 2016.

Draft Key Stage 5 Performance Tables for 2018 will be issued by the DfE in December 2015. We are confident that our new Cambridge Technicals in IT will be recognised on there.

      • IT Level 3 Certificate/Extended Certificate/Introductory Diploma/Foundation Diploma/Diploma/Extended Diploma - 05838-05842, 05877 (2016 suite)
    • Updates to internally assessed units - October 2018

Amendments have been made to some of the internally-assessed units for Level 3 Cambridge Technicals in Sport and Physical Activity. Please refer to the Subject Information Update for further details.

Please make sure you are using the most up-to-date versions of the units.

    • Change to CIMA syllabus

Learners can only claim this qualification after they have achieved the Chartered Institute of Management Accountants (CIMA) Certificate in Business Accounting.

As of 11 January 2017, CIMA assessments will be for the revised 2017 CIMA syllabus. Please refer to the notice for centres below for more information about how this affects existing and future students.
    • Change to the funding rate for the advanced apprenticeship framework

The funding rate for the advanced apprenticeship framework in IT, Software, Web and Telecoms Professionals is being changed.

From 1 April 2016, the funding value will reduce for new apprenticeship starts only; those already on a programme will remain on their existing rates.

The SFA is changing the rate for the competency aims - not knowledge, English or maths aims.

The new funding rates will be available and updated accordingly, on the learning aims search on the SFA Hub.

This change affects the Level 3 qualifications in the advanced apprenticeship.

      • Learn more on the framework details from Apprenticeship Frameworks Online
    • Clarification on specification content

We have identified a small number of areas of inconsistency in the description of certain chemical concepts in published resources supporting the GCE Chemistry A (H032/H432) specification. Please refer to the article for clarification of what we consider to be the correct approach in relation to these concepts.

OCR confirmed today that it will not be resubmitting any of its draft French, German or Spanish GCSEs or AS/A Levels for further accreditation review and will therefore be withdrawing from the provision of GCSEs and AS/A Levels in these subjects at the end of the current courses.

OCR has reluctantly taken this decision now so teachers can make alternative plans for next academic year. We will be working with schools to support them through these changes.

While qualification reform provided an exciting opportunity to innovate and offer new qualifications designed to stimulate language teaching and learning in this country, there is too much work to be done for OCR to achieve accreditation of its new Modern Foreign Language (MFL) qualifications in time for teachers to make a considered choice about new qualifications for this September. Fewer than 10% of students take OCR's current MFL qualifications.

OCR's Chief Executive William Burton said: "We would like to thank all those who contributed their expertise to OCR’s vision for a new style of MFL GCSE and A Level for schools. The input of teachers and subject experts from across the wider education community has been invaluable. This difficult decision comes from a combination of factors, including our different vision for language learning, the time we would need to prepare a further, highly technical submission, as well as the challenging economic climate in which OCR is operating. I believe it is in the best interests of MFL teachers to have clarity about what will be available at a time when they are making crucial decisions on behalf of their students."

OCR's existing range of MFL qualifications is being withdrawn, with final GCSE and AS/A Level assessments in summer 2017, and last resits for AS/A Level only in summer 2018.

While OCR regrets the loss of these subjects from its qualification portfolio, it will still offer a broad range of qualifications. MFL qualifications will also continue to be available through sister exam board Cambridge International Examinations at both 14-16, with Cambridge IGCSEs, and at 16-19 with Cambridge International A Levels and the Cambridge Pre-U.

The Introductory Diploma will allow your students to develop the scientific principles and practical techniques which when taken with other complementary science-based qualifications will prepare them to progress to higher education or employment in areas related to food, human or environmental science. They will learn to carry out experiments safely and accurately when testing products to yield results that can be used to inform the next stage in a scientific process.

The larger size, the Diploma, will enable your students to develop skills, knowledge and understanding of scientific principles and practical and analytical techniques. They will learn to carry out experiments safely and accurately and have the opportunity to collect, analyse, evaluate and present primary data.

Following feedback from the DfE we have decided to not resubmit the Foundation Diploma for inclusion in 2018 tables. We are keeping this under review while we work to develop a 1080 guided learning hours Extended Diploma. It is our intention that the Extended Diploma will be available for teaching in September 2016 but the earliest it could count in performance tables is 2019. We will keep you updated on our plans for this suite.

The qualifications allow for a high degree of flexibility with the choice of units that make up the qualifications, so students can specialise in the specific areas of the subject that interest them most.

Students at both levels can progress to employment or further education. In addition, at Level 3, Cambridge Technicals have UCAS points and can therefore enable progression to higher education as well.

The new Level 4 qualifications provide a progression route from Cambridge Technicals at Level 3. They can be achieved on a full-time or part-time basis – making them an attractive option for people in work who want to up-skill in order to improve their career prospects.

    • Both of OCR's Free Standing Mathematics Qualifications have been designed to offer mathematics learning that complements study in a range of other subjects.

The Advanced FSMQ, Additional Mathematics, is worth UCAS points for university admissions, and introduces students to the power and elegance of advanced mathematics.

The Intermediate FSMQ, Foundations of Advanced Mathematics (MEI), is designed to provide access to AS/A Level GCE Mathematics for those not yet ready to take them.

    • Other General Qualifications are designed to provide candidates with knowledge and understanding of their chosen subject. Those who gain the qualifications can follow a pathway to employment or to further or higher education.

They are offered at Levels 2 and 3 of the National Qualifications Framework.

These qualifications are assessed differently according to the approved specification, and may include a variety of assessment types.

    • Projects are stand-alone qualifications, at Levels 1 to 3. The project can take the form of a report, performance, artefact, investigation, design or dissertation (at L3) and can be on any topic the learner chooses. Learners are assessed on their ability to plan, research, develop and critically evaluate their work rather than on the outcome of the project itself.

    • Entry Level will close for registration on 31/08/13 – certification will be available until 31/08/14

Basic Skills are suitable for anyone over the age of 16 years who wishes to develop and prove their skills in literacy and/or numeracy.

At Entry Level (Entry 1, Entry 2 and Entry 3) candidates are assessed by a mixture of OCR-set and marked tasks and Centre-assessed and OCR-moderated work. At Levels 1 and 2 they are assessed by the National Basic Skills tests.

      Key information

The new Cambridge Progression suite of qualifications is now accredited. They're available from Entry Level to Level 2 and focus on the fundamentals of adult learning in English and Maths - core skills and knowledge, simple assessment and a framework of bite-sized, credit-based units.

If you're considering how to fill the gap created through the ending of Key and Basic Skills, or looking for a fresh approach to supporting English or Maths in your training programmes, our new Cambridge Progression suite of qualifications could be the answer.

The qualifications have been designed for students aged 16+ and can be delivered as a stand-alone programme or provide the foundation for a host of broader programmes. In designing them, we've drawn upon our RSA heritage in building some of the UK's most respected qualifications in basic skills.

The qualifications are approved for students aged 14 + and currently recognised for delivery in England and Northern Ireland.

    • Principal Learning is popular in its own right, and feedback indicates that centres have found it to be a valuable qualification which advances students' skills. Please click on the links below for details of Principal Learning qualifications we offer.

GCSEs are offered across Levels 1 and 2 of the National Qualifications Framework (NQF) and they are primarily targeted at secondary school pupils, but are also suitable for adult returners.

    • Core Maths is a descriptor for a range of different Level 3 qualifications, it is not a qualification title in itself. OCR and Mathematics in Education and Industry (MEI) have jointly developed two new qualifications designed to meet the Core Maths requirements: Level 3 Certificate in Quantitative Reasoning (MEI) and Level 3 Certificate in Quantitative Problem Solving (MEI). This is a well-established partnership which provides a firm foundation for curriculum and qualification development. Both of our qualifications are supported by a free resource package developed by MEI.

Further information about Core Maths qualifications is available from the Advanced Mathematics Support Programme.

Both OCR's qualifications have been accredited by Ofqual for first examination in 2016 and approved by the Department for Education as a performance measure from 2017. Each of our qualifications have been awarded the following UCAS tariff: A - 20, B - 16, C - 12, D - 10, E - 6.

      Qualifications

    • What occupations will they focus on?

T Levels are to be developed for the following occupational pathways:

      • Agriculture, Environmental and Animal Care
      • Business and Administrative
      • Catering and Hospitality
      • Childcare and Education
      • Construction
      • Creative and Design
      • Digital
      • Engineering and Manufacturing
      • Hair and Beauty
      • Health and Science
      • Legal, Finance and Accounting

      When will they be introduced?

A limited range of T Levels will be introduced by the government in 2020, and are currently being collaboratively developed by the Department for Education (DfE), the Institute for Apprenticeships and Technical Education (IfATE), education providers and employers.

T Levels are to be phased in, starting with a limited number of options to be offered by a controlled number of colleges and schools. The DfE hopes to have all its intended pathways available for final assessments by 2024, although it may be later before T Levels are universally available.

      2020 - Limited pathways

      Digital, Construction, Childcare and Education

      2021 - Additional routes added

Legal, Finance and Accounting, Engineering and Manufacturing, Health and Science

      2022 - Final routes added

Hair and Beauty, Agriculture, Environment and Animal Care, Business and Administrative Catering and Hospitality, Creative and Design Catering and Hospitality, Creative and Design

How will T Levels work with other Level 3 study programmes?

Applied General Level 3 qualifications such as our Cambridge Technicals form part of the academic route, with the primary purpose of providing access to further study at university.

The technical route is designed to take people into occupations and higher level technical training. The T Level programmes will mirror the same occupational pathways as apprenticeships.

The DfE is reviewing which qualifications it should fund at Level 3, and is consulting with interested parties throughout the design of the review.

What if a student isn’t ready for a Level 3 T Level programme at age 16?

Students who are not ready to access a technical education route at age 16 will be offered a ‘transition programme' to help them prepare.

      Will T Levels be funded?

The DfE has committed additional funding specifically for T Level providers.

OCR qualifications and units can be combined to create personalised learning programmes. For information on learning programmes:

    • Our suite is ideal for all learners and is designed to give them the skills crucial for competing in today’s challenging employment market. They can progress along a pathway at their own pace - achieving single units, a QCF Award or a QCF Certificate. It gives learners the confidence, knowledge, understanding and skills required to enter, return to or progress in the workplace.

    • Our Religious Studies qualifications have been created to inspire students to engage in relevant topical issues and acquire knowledge and a critical understanding of major issues that are relevant to learners in the twenty-first century.

The GCSE (9-1) specification will help students develop knowledge and understanding of religions and non-religious beliefs, such as atheism, humanism and secularism and tackle issues relevant in modern British society such as dialogue between religions and non-religious beliefs and attitudes.

Our AS and A Level Religious Studies specifications are an evolution of our popular legacy specification and areas will be familiar to teachers already following our courses, but are also clear and logically laid out for schools new to OCR. They provide students with the exciting opportunity to gain a deeper understanding of world religions, explore the philosophy of religion, and religion and ethics.
