    • Mental Toughness

Mental Toughness describes the mind-set that every person adopts in everything they do. It is closely related to qualities such as character, resilience, grit, etc. Mindset explains why an individual behaves the way they do. You could describe mindset as both the pre-cursor to behaviour and the explanation for much behaviour. This is especially important for young people in understanding who they are and how they can realise their potential

Mental Toughness is a major factor in:

  • Performance – explaining up to 25% of the variation in performance in individuals
  • Positive behaviour - more engaged, more positive, more “can do”
  • Openness to learning - individuals are more aspirational, more ambitious, seeing opportunities for learning everywhere and understanding the need for a transferable skillset in preparedness for the world of employment.

How OCR can help to support your learners

We have a number of units within our Life and Living Skills suite that can help develop these personal skills that are measured using the Mental Toughness assessment. The units are ideal to use with both young people and adults who need support to help them progress onto their next stage - be it employment or further study. The certificated outcome provides a framework and clear evidence of achievement.

The qualification contains over 150 units across a range of areas. The Personal Skills group in particular includes units such as:

  • Developing Self M13, M23
  • Dealing with Problems M14, M24
  • Emotional Well-being M15, M25

At Levels 1 and 2, OCR’s Personal Life Skills includes units such as ‘Maintaining and improving personal health and well-being’, ‘Managing risk in personal decision making’ and ‘Assessing myself for work’. These help to develop skills needed in both life and work and could be used as part of a PSHE programme.

Attributes and attitudes are incredibly important to learners in helping them to be successful in life and for employment. We are pleased to be able to offer our centres access to AQR’s Mental Toughness testing service at a reduced rate.

  • Validated psychometric assessment
  • Provide a clear starting point before any interventions or delivery
  • Allows you to measure distance travelled by a learner
  • Encourages learners to reflect on their personal skills and attributes
