Media Studies textual analysis

Assessment: General qualifications

Quick Links

Media Studies textual analysis

The following component comprises a textual analysis activity where candidates have to analyse an excerpt provided on DVD:

  • GCSE (9-1) Media Studies (J200) - Component 01

Checking and using the DVD

Microsoft has stopped supporting DVD playback via Windows Media Player. If you need to use a Windows-based PC to play the DVD extract in the examination then we recommend downloading one of the following free players:
  • VLC Media Player
  • Windows Classic Media Player

Instructions to teachers are provided with the DVD. Please follow these carefully.

Make sure the DVD is checked for sound and visual quality as stated two working days before the exam on the equipment that will be used in the examination.

Confidentiality of the DVD extract and question paper must be maintained at all times whilst checks are made.

Preparing the exam room

The examination room should be arranged so that all candidates have a good view of the screen to be used.

We recommend you use blinds or curtains on windows to stop any possible glare on the screen from outside light in the examination room. Candidates have 1 hour and 15 minutes to answer the questions on the exam paper.

The format of the examination

For the GCSE (9-1) in Media Studies J200/01 exam, the extract provided for analysis will be an unknown extract from one of the two set television dramas candidates will have studied in component 01, section A: either The Avengers or Cuffs.

The examination lasts 1 hour and 45 minutes.

The DVD extract is self-contained and runs for 30 minutes at the start of the examination.

The DVD provides on-screen instructions that let candidates know when they can read questions and make notes between viewings.

Once the DVD has finished playing, candidates have 1 hour and 15 minutes to answer the questions on the exam paper.
