Students will be provided with support materials in the form of formulae and revised equations sheets in 2023 exams for GCSE maths, physics and combined science.

Over 8,000 responses were received to an Ofqual consultation seeking views on carrying forward the 2022 arrangements for formulae and equation sheets to 2023. More than 90% of respondents - including students and teachers - supported the proposals agreeing that sheets were appropriate considering the disruption to education for the 2023 cohort caused by the pandemic.

Respondents thought that providing this support would be fair when comparing these students to previous cohorts and that it would make the experience of taking exams less stressful for students and increase their confidence.

They also said it was more important that students could understand, apply and rearrange formulae and equations rather than memorise them.

A further technical consultation is expected for exam boards on the implementation of this decision.
