Results trends 2025: VTQs
22 August 2025
Alongside GCSEs and A Levels, hundreds of thousands of results were also issued for Vocational and Technical Qualifications (VTQs). As the total number of A Levels being taken this year actually fell despite a rise in the population of 18 year-olds, Ofqual has suggested this may be due to more young people making different choices about the type of qualification that suits them and potentially opting for VTQs instead or in combination with other qualifications.
For vocational and technical performance table qualifications, between 1 March and 31 August 2025 a total of 607,770 results at pass or above were issued in England. These include:
Level 2 and below
Over 355,000 results were issued for technical awards (Level 1/2 and Level 2) such as Cambridge Nationals. The subject areas with the most grades awarded were Leisure, Travel and Tourism, and Health, Public Services and Care. Also,12,475 results were issued for technical certificates (Level 2).
Level 3
The vast majority of Level 3 VTQ results (210,640) were for Applied General Qualifications such as Cambridge Technicals. Business, Administration and Law was the most popular subject, followed by Social Sciences. Also, over 29,065 results were issued for Tech Levels.
T Levels (Level 3)
Whilst the number of students completing T Level qualifications did increase this year from 7,421 in 2024 to 11,909, these numbers represent a very small percentage (less than 2%) of the overall population of 18 year-olds.
Ofqual will publish an equalities analysis, setting out the differences in results between students with different characteristics, in the autumn.
