Update on proposed defunding of Level 3 Cambridge Technicals qualifications 

We are delighted to confirm that five of the seven Level 3 Cambridge Technicals (2016) qualifications proposed for defunding will continue to be funded until our redeveloped qualifications are launched. 

In May 2022, the DfE published a list of qualifications that that were proposed for defunding in England from July 2024 due to an overlap with wave 1 and wave 2 T Levels. 

We appealed against the defunding of seven Cambridge Technicals qualifications. Appeals for the following five qualifications were successful: 

• Engineering: Foundation Diploma (05824) 540GLH 
• Engineering: Diploma (05825) 720GLH 
• Engineering: Extended Diploma (05873) 1080GLH 
• Information Technology: Introductory Diploma (05840) 360GLH 
• Information Technology: Foundation Diploma (05841) 540GLH

Appeals for the following qualifications were not successful and will no longer attract funding from July 2024: 

• Information Technology: Diploma (05842) 720GLH
• Information Technology: Extended Diploma (05877) 1080GLH

All other Cambridge Technicals (2016) Level 3 qualifications did not overlap with T Levels and will continue to be funded until our redeveloped qualifications are launched.

Funding for Level 2 Cambridge Technicals confirmed until 2026 

The DfE has published its response to the consultation on post-16 qualifications at Level 2 and below – you can read our summary of the response on our policy web pages. 

We’re pleased to confirm all Cambridge Technicals qualifications at Level 2 will continue to be funded in England until a new provision is introduced. This means replacement qualifications will be funded in two waves; in September 2026 and September 2027, mirroring the implementation of T Levels.
