New Cambridge Technical in Sport to focus on grassroots sport sector skills 27 November 2015

OCR’s new Level 3 Cambridge Technical in Sport and Physical Activity has been designed with reversing the general decline in grassroots sports participation, getting more people active and improving the nation’s health in mind.

While elite sports continue to thrive and the UK’s £20 billion sports sector is growing, Sport England’s latest figures indicate that Britain is becoming more sedentary with almost two-thirds of UK adults doing no regular exercise and concern that the 2012 Olympic legacy has failed the general public.

The new Cambridge Technical has been developed in partnership with leading sports bodies, as well as employers, further education (FE) colleges, and universities. By shifting the focus from elite sportsmanship, the new Cambridge Technical will equip more of the 70,000 young people that study sport post-16 with a broader, more practical mix of skills they need to progress into employment, an apprenticeship or continued study.

Sports Leaders UK, one of the key development partners, and OCR today announced a further partnership regarding Sports Leaders UK Leadership qualifications and the OCR Cambridge Technical in Sport and Physical Activity that allows schools and colleges to deliver an exciting, high quality programme of study that is easier to assess and recognises the achievement of two vocational qualifications. Mapping means that learners on the two vocational qualifications can achieve the maximum amount of recognition for their learning - enhancing their opportunity to progress into higher education or employment.

Colin Huffen, Coaching Network Manager of Sports Coach UK said: “We are delighted to have been a key partner in the development of the new suite of Cambridge Technicals in Sport and Physical Activity. This will ensure that all learners on the programme will have the opportunity to understand the fundamental ‘how-to’ skills of coaching. Due to this collaboration, the content taught will align with and incorporate UKCC Level 2 Club Coach standards.”

OCR’s work in partnership with IQL UK (Royal Life Saving Society UK) means that taking the Cambridge Technical in Sport will count towards qualifying as a life guard too.

Other sports organisations who have welcomed the new qualification include: BodyPower, the Chartered Institute for the Management of Sport and Physical Activity (CIMPSA), CPSport, English Federation of Disability Sport, Limb Power, Mencap Sport, Northamptonshire Sport, Powerbreathe, Rounders England, Royal Yachting Association, Tennis Foundation, The Gym, UK Athletics, UK Deaf Sport and Youth Sport Trust.
