AS Level Science 01 February 2016

AS Level Science to be withdrawn (H178)

OCR’s AS Level in Science (H178) is being withdrawn in Summer 2016. This is slightly earlier than originally planned and is part of the government reform of general qualifications. This is due to similar and overlapping content to the new reformed separate AS Level qualifications in Biology, Chemistry and Physics. The final assessment opportunity will be the summer 2016 series.

*Resit arrangements are still to be confirmed. Ofqual, the regulator for qualifications, examinations and assessments in England, has launched a public consultation on resits for legacy GCSEs, AS and A levels. You can find more information on the consultation here: https://www.gov.uk/government/consultations/resits-for-legacy-gcse-as-and-a-levels. This consultation closes on 2 February 2016.

When the results of the consultation and Ofqual’s position on resits are announced, we will send out a notice to all centres confirming the position and arrangements for centres.

For further information on deadlines for submitting entries, entry amendments/withdrawals and the submission of marks for internal assessment please see the Admin guide and entry codes: 14-19 qualifications. We will continue to support and assess the qualification up to the conclusion of the final assessment series with resources such as Examiner Reports.

For centres looking for an alternative AS Level course to replace Science H178, we would recommend our new AS Level Science suite of qualifications:

      • New AS Level Biology A (H020)
      • New AS Level Biology B (H022)
      • New AS Level Chemistry A (H032)
      • New AS Level Chemistry B (Salters) (H033)
      • New AS Level Physics A (H156)
      • New AS Level Physics A (H157)

These qualifications have been developed for first teaching in September 2015 and offer a variety of approaches, content and assessment of Science. You can find more details about our Science qualifications on the subject page of the OCR website.

Alternatively, you may be interested in our Level 3 Cambridge Technicals in Science for Technicians. Cambridge Technicals are vocational qualifications designed to give a work-focused alternative to A levels.
