Level 3 Certificate in Mathematical Techniques and Applications for Engineers and Level 3 Certificate in Mathematics for Engineering 01 May 2016

Withdrawal of Level 3 Certificate in Maths for Engineering and Level 3 Certificate in Mathematical Techniques and Applications for Engineers

Following the reform of general qualifications and changes to funding criteria, we are withdrawing:

      • the Level 3 Certificate in Mathematical Techniques and Applications for Engineers, and
      • the Level 3 Certificate in Mathematics for Engineering.

We regret the loss of any qualification and recognise that these qualifications make a unique contribution. However, due to on-going reforms, lack of recognition in school performance tables and declining entry numbers, we have made the difficult decision to withdraw these qualifications.

The final assessment for both qualifications will be June 2016.

We will continue to support and assess the qualifications until the final assessment.

Note: there will not be a series in January 2017 for the Level 3 Certificate in Mathematics for Engineering (H860).

If you are looking for alternative qualifications, we recommend the following:

      • Level 3 Cambridge Technicals in Engineering (05822-05825): Cambridge Technicals are vocational qualifications for students aged 16+. They are designed with the workplace in mind and provide a high-quality alternative to A Levels. These qualifications allow students to develop the specialist knowledge and understanding required in the engineering sector. At Diploma level, students also develop further skills by completing a range of units through a choice of specialist pathways.
      • AS/A Level GCE Mathematics and A Level Further Mathematics: We are currently redeveloping our AS/A Level Mathematics suite for first teaching from September 2017. For more information see our Mathematics subject page.
      • AS/A Level Physics (H156/H556/H157/H557):
        • Physics A (H156, H556) has a content-led, flexible approach. The specification is divided into topics, each covering different key concepts. As students progress through the course they will build on their knowledge, applying their understanding to solve problems on topics ranging from sub-atomic particles to the entire universe. For A Level, the Practical Endorsement supports the development of practical skills.
        • Physics B (Advancing Physics) (H157, H557) has a context-led approach. Students learn about fundamental concepts in a range of different contexts, conveying the excitement of contemporary physics. Practical skills are embedded within the specification. Students are expected to carry out practical work to prepare for a written examination that will specifically test these skills.

For more information on submitting entries, amending or withdrawing entries and submitting marks for internal assessment, please see the Administration section of the website.
