Example set of chemistry practicals 03 April 2017

Chemistry (Gateway Science J248 and Twenty First Century Science J258)

To exemplify how the requirements of the minimum numbers of practical activities and coverage of required apparatus and techniques can be achieved, we have compiled below a suggested list of activities. These activities have been mapped into a copy our (optional) Practical Activity Tracker to show how the requirements are covered. There are also links below to the activity documents and the (optional) Learner Record Sheets.

Number of activities: 10
PAG 1 – Reactivity trend Suggested Activity 2: Reactivity of metals
PAG 2 – Electrolysis Suggested Activity 2: Microscale electrolysis of copper(II) chloride
PAG 3 – Separation techniques Suggested Activity 2: Chromatography of leaf chloroplasts
PAG 4 – Distillation Suggested Activity 1: Extraction of limonene
PAG 5 – Identification of species Suggested Activity 1: Precipitation and flame tests
PAG 6 – Titration Suggested Activity 1: Titration of sodium hydroxide with hydrochloric acid
PAG 7 – Production of salts Suggested Activity 2: Microscale copper sulfate synthesis
PAG 8 – Measuring rates of reaction Suggested Activity 1: Measuring the rate of reaction between Mg and HCl
PAG 8 – Measuring rates of reaction Suggested Activity 2 The disappearing cross
PAG 8 – Measuring rates of reaction Suggested Activity 4: Heat of a displacement reaction
  • Chemistry practical tracker (optional)
  • Chemistry learner record sheet (optional)

Suggested sets for the other specifications are available via the science news feed, and compiled together in one document.
