AS and A Level Geology

We are pleased to announce our reformed AS and A Level qualifications in Geology (H014/H414) are now available in Northern Ireland.

In consultation with universities, industry and teachers we have refreshed and restructured the course to increase the accessibility for learners, and provide content that reflects the range of activities Earth Scientists do in the real world. By adopting a spiral curriculum approach the course is accessible to learners, introducing and developing basic concepts in the AS year and then developing and applying concepts in context in the second year. Ours is the only Geology A Level that allows learners to experience the areas where most geologists work in context - civil engineering and petroleum geology.

Geology is the only subject in our A Level Science suite available in Northern Ireland. It is a linear course with terminal examinations. The A Level follows the reformed English model with a separate practical endorsement, based on a direct assessment of each learner’s practical competence against a common standard over 12 practicals. The AS Level Geology is a separate, co-teachable qualification with a single exam that does not contribute to the final A Level grade.
