New set products reminder for AS and A Level Media Studies 02 September 2024

New set products reminder (first teach from September 2023)

In November 2022, we provided details on the new set products for AS and A Level Media Studies. We'd like to remind you that the first assessment of the new set products for A Level Media Studies H409 will be June 2025. The original set products were assessed for the final time in June 2024.

As we begin the new academic year, please make sure you are using the updated versions of the specifications, which list the new set products, with your students:

      • AS Level Media Studies H009 specification (first teach from September 2023)
      • A Level Media Studies H409 specification (first teach from September 2023)

You can view and download these specifications and resources to support teaching of the new set products from Teach Cambridge.

      Non-exam assessment (NEA) marking guidance

We’ve clarified the NEA marking guidance in the marking criteria for AS and A Level Media Studies on how teachers should assess candidate work that includes content which is not original. We've updated the marking guidance in the following documents:

      AS Level Media Studies

      • Specification – version 2.2 (see section 3i)
      • H009/02/03 Creating media sample briefs – version 2

      A Level Media Studies

      • Specification – version 2.2 (see section 3i)
      • H409/03/04 Making media sample briefs – version 2

You can view these documents on the AS and A Level Media Studies qualifications pages of our website and Teach Cambridge.

The guidance confirms that all content (including all images, text, video and audio) submitted as part of the NEA production must be original and created by the candidate themselves. The exceptions to this are the use of music in audio or audio-visual production work, and the use of existing brand logos. Where candidates have used any other found materials these must not be considered for credit.

You can view further information about the requirements of original materials in NEA productions in section 4d of the Media Studies specifications.

If you have any queries about this update, please call our Customer Support Centre on 01223 553998 or email us at media@ocr.org.uk.
