Updated specification and resources for GCSE Mathematics J560 17 September 2026

We are updating the wording used in GCSE Mathematics (J560) questions that assess bounds.

From November 2026 onwards, questions assessing the higher tier content of statement 4.01c will, where appropriate, ask students to calculate the ‘lower bound’ or the ‘upper bound’ of the requested value rather than using language such as ‘maximum possible’, ‘minimum possible’, ‘shortest possible’, ‘longest possible’ and so on.

The example below shows how this change would apply to a previously set question. From November 2026, the final sentence in this type of question will read: 'Calculate the upper bound for the height of the triangle'.

We've amended the GCSE Mathematics specification to reflect this change. It now includes revised examples for statement 4.01c.

You can view and download the updated specification (version 2.1) on our website and Teach Cambridge.

We have also updated the following GCSE Mathematics resources on Teach Cambridge:

      • revision checklists for students
      • check in test 4.01 Approximation and estimation (H) and section check in test Section 4 Approximation and estimation (H)
      • the November 2021 J560/06 mark scheme and examiners' report
      • the practice papers (set 2) J560/05 mark scheme
