Updated NEA guides for GCSE, AS and A Level Physical Education
28 January 2026
Following a review of our non-exam assessment (NEA) guidance, and your feedback, we have updated the NEA guides for the following qualifications:
GCSE Physical Education J587
In our guide to non-exam assessment (NEA) for GCSE Physical Education, we have amended the following:
- Page 83, section 2e.13 – We have refreshed the terminology used for core and advanced rock climbing skills. The updated language now aligns with National Governing Body (NGB) guidance, improves accessibility and emphasises the safety requirements for this sport. This update applies for first assessment in summer 2027 and does not impact the assessment requirements for rock climbing.
- Page 89, section 2f – We have changed gymnastics from an ‘on-site’ activity to an ‘off-site’ activity (from first teach September 2026).
You can view and download the updated GCSE guide to non-exam assessment (version 4.9) on our website and Teach Cambridge.
AS and A Level Physical Education H155/H555
In our guide to non-exam assessment (NEA) for AS and A Level Physical Education, we have amended the following:
- Page 103, section 2e.48 Triathlon – To comply with the British Triathlon Competition Rules Book, we have removed the term ‘drafting’ under the advanced skills for cycling.
- Page 111, section 2f – To help candidates provide higher-quality evidence more easily outside of their centre, we have added gymnastics to the list of ‘off-site’ activities. Team dance is also now an ‘off-site’ activity. (From first teach September 2026.)
You can view and download the updated AS and A Level guide to non-exam assessment (version 6.9) on our website and Teach Cambridge.
