Entry Level, GCSE and AS/A Level Physical Education: Arrangements for moderating non-exam assessment for 2021 15 December 2020

We've already provided information on the adaptations we've made to some of our GCSE, AS and A Level qualifications for students certifying in 2021.

To support you further, we can now confirm arrangements for submitting non-exam assessment (NEA) for the following adapted qualifications:

      • Entry Level Physical Education - Your guide to the changes
      • GCSE (J587) Physical Education - Your guide to the changes
      • AS Level (H155) and A Level (H555) Physical Education - Your guide to the changes

What does the assessment look like in 2021?

Changes to GCSE, AS and A level NEA components

Please note that, from this year, the Practical Performance and Analysis/Evaluation tasks for GCSE, AS and A level Physical Education have been split into different components. This means they can be assessed and submitted separately and you will have greater visibility of how any adjustments affect the marks for each component.

We have added the new component codes to the ‘What has changed?’ section of our ‘Your Guide to the Changes for 2021’ documents above. You can also view the ‘Your Guide to the Changes for 2021’ documents from each of our Physical Education qualification pages.

      Visiting moderation: Visit replacement arrangements

For the June 2021 series, we will also not be sending visiting moderators to centres. Instead, we will ask you to provide filmed evidence of performances and send them to your moderator.

The arrangements for the remote visiting moderation will be as similar to the normal process as possible, without having anyone visiting your centre.

We have produced a new moderator information form to replace the usual visit arrangement form:

      • Entry Level moderator information form
      • GCSE moderation information form
      • AS Level moderation information form
      • A Level moderation information form

This form asks you to let us know which practical activities you will be entering marks for this year and your contact details so your moderator can get in touch with you. Please submit the form to us by 14 January 2021.

All forms can be downloaded from the Forms finder web page and the Administration > Forms section of the qualification pages for Physical Education.

      How to submit work

      Entry Level Physical Education R463

For Entry Level, we have simply removed the visiting moderation option, leaving the postal and Repository options. Once you have made your entries, your moderator will get in touch with you by mid-March to organise sending evidence and marks for practical activities and analysing performance to them. You will also need to submit your overall marks to OCR by 15 May.

GCSE, AS and A Level - practical performance

For the GCSE, AS and A Level practical performance components, you should send filmed evidence to your moderator as you would have done with off-site activity evidence previously, on a USB or DVD. You will be contacted by your moderator by mid-March to organise sending evidence and marks for practical activities to them.

For GCSE you will need to submit a minimum of 50% of your practical marks, filmed evidence and competitive logs to your moderator by 31 March and the remainder by 15 May.

For AS and A Level you will need to submit all of your practical marks, filmed evidence and competitive logs by 15 May.

GCSE and AS and A Level - analysing/evaluating components

We are working on a new e-Submission system that will be available from February as an alternative to sending work by post for the GCSE AEP, AS and A Level PE EAPI components. We will provide more guidance about how to submit your work for these components in the new year.

For GCSE, you will need to submit all of your AEP marks to the moderator by 31 March so that they can request a sample of these from you for moderation.

For AS and A Level you will need to submit your EAPI marks and evidence by 31 March.

For all GCSE, AS and A level PE NEA components, you will also need to submit your overall marks to OCR by 15 May.

New PE mark input forms (PEMIF) for June 2021

To support these changes, we will be updating the PE Mark Input forms (PEMIF) for our adapted PE qualifications as there are different requirements in place for 2021. The forms will be coming in January 2021 and we will let you know when they are available. Please make sure that you use these forms for the June 2021 NEA components.

      Filmed evidence and supporting information

      Updated filming requirements

We understand that there are a lot of challenges this year in terms of accessing some activities, fewer opportunities for formal competitive participation, and some restrictions around the types of practice which can be done in age group sport (for example, rugby union).

The key message is to please focus on what you can film and gather evidence on an ongoing basis, in order to meet the requirements as fully as you can. We want to be able to base your centre moderation on the best range of evidence possible.

Based on your feedback and the way that the situation this term has continued to change, we have amended our filmed evidence requirements and these changes have now been approved by Ofqual.

For on-site activities, a selection rather than all will need to be filmed depending on the range that you are assessing.

Full details of the filming requirements and additional guidance and support about filmed evidence and the moderation process can be found in our updated ‘Your guide to the changes’ documents.

      What next?

We understand that there are a lot of challenges this year in terms of delivering the NEA components. The key message is to please continue working on what you can deliver and gathering evidence which can be used in the moderation process.

Do read the updated ‘Your guide to the changes’ documents which contain more guidance and information about moderation and evidence.

Please complete your moderator information form and return it to us by 14 January 2021.

We will provide further updates in the new year.

If you have any queries about this update, please call our Customer Support Centre on 01223 553998 or email the PE team at PE@ocr.org.uk.
